392 Women Killed in the Name of Honor in 2024, HRCP Report Reveals

Islamabad: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has released its annual report for 2024, revealing alarming statistics on violence against women in the country. According to the report, 392 women were killed in the name of honor by November 2024. The highest number of cases were reported in Punjab (168), followed by Sindh (151).

Experts believe the actual number of honor killings is significantly higher, as many cases go unreported due to cultural and societal pressures.

In addition to honor killings, the report highlights multiple forms of violence against women in 2024, including 1969 rape cases، 299 incidents of domestic violence، 43 acid attack cases and 30 cases reported where women were burned.

A comparison with previous years shows a decrease in reported honor killings, with 490 cases in 2023 and 590 cases in 2022. However, the issue remains a grave concern.

Notably, honor killings are not limited to Pakistan. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), approximately 5,000 women are killed annually worldwide in the name of honor, though this figure represents only reported cases. Experts estimate the actual numbers are far higher.

The widespread issue of honor killings and violence against women is driven by a combination of cultural, religious, and environmental factors. Key issues include:

• Conservative religious and cultural practices.

• Harsh and rigid environments in households.

• Lack of educational content addressing gender equality and human rights in schools and colleges.

Additionally, educational institutions in Pakistan are under the influence of conservative students unions, which impose bans on progressive activities in educational institutes and promote an environment that hinders societal change.

Addressing the severe mistreatment of women requires immediate attention. Tackling the root causes of violence and prioritizing gender-sensitive education are essential steps in mitigating this crisis. A coordinated effort by the government, civil society, and educational institutions is critical to ensuring the safety and empowerment of women in Pakistan.
